Sony has not only presented a new promotional video for the PlayStation VR2, highlighting the features of the VR goggles, but also Hints made about the gamesthat we can expect there. It can be heard that Sony hopes that a large number of indie titles for the PS VR2 will be released.

Shuhei Yoshida, head of the independent developer initiative at Sony, has indicated that it will certainly be indie developers who take risks and deliver innovative projects. They are the ones waiting for “the next VR boom”. At the same time, the PlayStation manager also refers to big titles like “Horizon: Call of the Mountain” and the VR version of “Resident Evil Village”.

Yoshida admits that the VR market is small at the moment. However, with his Quest models, Meta opened the eyes of many people and piqued their interest. Sony can also benefit from this. Personally, I’m less optimistic: When the first PlayStation VR came out, VR was still on everyone’s lips and touted as the next big trend, while virtual reality is now largely accepted as a niche. Given that the first PS VR could only sell for about 5 million of the PlayStation 4’s sales of about 117 million, I don’t really see any better prospects for the successor model.

This is doubly true in times of high inflation, when many people are cutting back on their spending and the PlayStation 5 is also struggling with inventory shortages. Especially since the new PlayStation VR2 won’t be backwards compatible with the first generation or its accompanying games, which may have forced many existing customers to upgrade.

I’m sure Sony will present us great hardware – the specs are impressive. However, I still think that the PS VR2 will again only reach a niche audience, which will also lead to the developers of core games being reluctant and mainly mini-games and compact “experiences” appearing for the VR headset. Still, I hope I will be taught better.
