Millions of people in Germany need to have their corona vaccination refreshed. This is apparent from the monthly report of the RKI. Even though the number of vaccinations has recently increased for the first time.

In view of the corona pandemic, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) still sees the need to vaccinate millions of people – although slightly more vaccinations were administered in July than in the previous month. The booster vaccination continues to provide highly effective protection against severe courses, even in Omicron times. Therefore, in addition to starting vaccination for the unvaccinated, vaccination gaps must also be closed for those who have only had basic immunization so far, as the RKI team reports on Thursday in its new monthly report on Covid 19 vaccinations.

In June, according to the RKI, the previous low in the vaccination process was reached with almost one million vaccinations in some 29,700 vaccination centers. In July, the number of vaccinating agencies continued to fall (27,900), but at just over a million, slightly more vaccinations were registered for the first time than in the previous month, according to the report. “The declining trend in vaccination numbers that has been going on since the beginning of the year appears to have stopped for the first time in July.”

Nevertheless, according to the experts, about 1.3 million people over the age of 60 and about 7.8 million people under 60 who are only basic immunized should renew their vaccination protection with at least one vaccination. About 7.3 million adults under the age of 60 and 1.9 million over the age of 60 would have received no vaccination at all. Little has changed here from the previous month.

According to the current monitoring from early August, more than 85 percent of the adult population is basic immunized, 72 percent has received a first booster vaccination, almost 10 percent per second.

According to the RKI hardly any movement during the first vaccinations

According to the report, there has been a recent change in the corona vaccination rate in Germany, especially with the second booster vaccination for the elderly. However, according to the most recently evaluated data, the majority of nursing home residents have not yet received a second booster vaccination, the report said. The first vaccinations were given the least.

The Standing Committee on Vaccination (Stiko) recommends a second booster injection for some groups, including people with suppressed immune systems, nursing home residents, people age 70 and older, and staff at medical facilities. The RKI experts reaffirm in the new vaccination note that booster vaccinations are generally very effective against hospitalization due to Corona.

According to RKI information, the risk for unvaccinated people of being treated in a hospital because of Covid-19 is many times greater than for people who have been boosted: so it is 2.9 times (12 to 17 year olds), 3, 3-fold (18 to 59-year-olds) and 4.8-fold (from 60-year-olds) increased. These data are from mid-May to mid-June.
